Review: Super Monkey Ball - Banana Blitz (Wii)

Score: 81

Love it or hate it, you'll probably have seen the Super Monkey Ball franchise by now - cuddly monkey characters inside a rolling ball in a 3D maze. But there's more to Super Monkey Ball than this, so read on...

Super Monkey Ball

You see, the high-in-the-sky 3D maze antics is just one half of Super Monkey Ball. On the Wii especially, a lot of the fun will centre around the 50, that's right, I said 50 extra mini-games.

With games ranging from darts to surfing to hurdling to archery to boxing to bowling to snowboarding, every major genre is represented here, in Monkeyfied form, often for up to 4 players and often involving both Wiimotes and nunchuks. In our family, the mini-games were Super Monkey Ball for a while, with different ages gravitating towards different games. Old school gamers will appreciate the 3D lunar lander, for example - not that this has much to do with monkeys, but who cares?

And, of course, your typical teenager will also have fun trying to crack the dozens of levels of main Monkeyball action, with the Wiimote used well as tilt-controller to guide your chosen character on their way.

Recommended - there really is something here for everyone, it's all slickly programmed. The score perhaps reflects that nothing here is of 'killer' quality, but there's no doubting the wide fun factor and it'll keep your family amused for many hours.
