Review: Red Steel (Wii)

Score: 92

Never mind the cute sports characters that come with the bundled Wii package - it's time to get down to some serious mayhem. Red Steel is a high budget title in every regard and it shows.

Red Steel

The idea is that you have to battle the Tokyo underground/mafia in order to rescue your true love - or something like that - there are certainly enough cut scenes to explain what's going on.

Most of the time though, it's a case of battling through a sequence of superbly rendered locations, blasting the bad guys with laser-pointed modern weapons and - occasionally - doing battle with samurai swords.

The animations, explosions and action are superbly recreated and Red Steel is a real showcase for what the Wii can do. There's atmosphere aplenty, with great sound effects, ambient music and thumping heartbeats.

Weapon aiming is done by simply pointing the Wii remote and this works well, while you move around using the motion detection in the remote. This works well enough but isn't as fast as you might sometimes like. In sword-play situations, you'll also need the Nunchuk attachment, which adds a whole different degree of complexity to the game.

As you might expect, the multi-player version should be a lot of fun, if you have some like-minded friends and enough spare remotes and Nunchuks.

Whether creeping through warehouses, entering nightclubs to question suspects or sneaking into offices, the 3D action shines and is incredibly immersive. The best Wii game so far? Almost certainly.
