Fairway
for all Psion palmtops... and now also for Nokia 9210/9300/9500 Communicators, and for Symbian UIQ!

FAIRWAY is the famous 3D tournament golf game/simulation, allowing you to play a one or two-player four-round tournament against 20 top computer players. You have a full set of clubs to choose from (in fact, you get to carry the whole lot round with you, which is something you couldn't do on a real course!) and factors as wind, slope and bunkers wreak their usual havoc with your scoring...

A brief history of FAIRWAY

(A brief testament to OPL, the language Fairway is written in. If you compare Fairway for the Series 3 with Fairway for the Nokia 9500, with eleven years and countless machines between them, you'll find 80% of the code is almost exactly the same! Amazing. OPL can be found here and is highly recommended.)

  • 1992? - wrote Pitch and Putt as shareware for Series 3
  • Pitch and Putt included for Psion on Games Pack 1
  • Re-issued for shareware scene as one-hole demo

  • 1993 - rewrote FAIRWAY for Series 3a, with digital sound etc. v2.2
  • Psion include FAIRWAY in their Games Pack 3a, with me adding a Jokes and Quotes module. v2.3
  • 1996 - Re-written for the smaller Psion Siena.
  • 1997 - revised FAIRWAY slightly, v2.4, making the program smaller and with all my contact details updated.
  • 1997 - updated and upgraded the game for EPOC/32, adding water hazards etc, to create Series 5 Golf, which Psion released as part of the commercial Games Arcade.
  • 1999 - released a patch to make the Games Arcade version run on the Psion Series 5mx and Ericsson MC218 etc.
  • 1999 - released version 3.0 for the Psion Revo.
  • 2002 - Games Arcade is officially no longer sold and my contract with Psion is over - contact me if you need this program for the Series 5/5mx

  • March 2004 - ported over to Symbian UIQ, now that OPL is available for the platform.

Downloading

Nokia 9300/9500 Communicators

Download v4.0 of Fairway here as fairway.sis (241k).
v4.0 includes up to date golfer names, a smoother swing bar, better gameplay and tweaked visuals. Digital sound has been removed because of technical issues - you can't win them all! 8-)

I've also done a detailed User Guide (fairwayguide.pdf, 156K) to the program.

If you haven't already done so, you'll also need to install the OPL Runtime patch, from Symbian, which gives your communicator the ability to run games and applications written in the OPL language. Get the OPL runtime for the Nokia 9300/9500 here. Please get feedback and reports of any bugs to me as soon as possible!

Nokia 9210 Communicators

Download v3.15 of Fairway here as fairway3_9210.sis (322k). You'll also need to install the MediaServerOPX, if you haven't already done so, so that digital sound works on your Communicator.
v3.15 includes a fix for the program working at proper speed on ALL non-English units; Changes since 3.13 are proper swing timing on French and Dutch machines, plus proper developer key shows during installation. Changes since v3.10 of the 9210 version are simply speed tweaks for the faster processor and a fix to the 'Overflow' error.

I've also done a detailed User Guide (fairwayguide.pdf, 156K) to the program.

If you haven't already done so, you'll also need to install the OPL Runtime patch, from Symbian, which gives your communicator the ability to run games and applications written in the OPL language. Get the OPL runtime for the Nokia 9200 series here. Please get feedback and reports of any bugs to me as soon as possible!

If you're upgrading from a registered Psion Revo version, note that your code will no longer work, due to the Nokia's different character set. Contact me for a complimentary new code.

Symbian UIQ smartphones (P800/P900, etc.)

UIQ versionDownload v3.20 of the UIQ version here as fairway320uiq.zip (422k). Once unzipped, you'll need to read the README.TXT file and install the fairway.sis file in the usual way.

If you haven't already done so, you'll need to have already installed the free OPL 'runtime' on your smartphone (included, as OPL-UIQ-050.sis). This is a small and safe patch that gives your device the ability to run OPL freeware and shareware programs and is highly recommended. You can even write your own, on your device, should you feel ambitious! The home page for the OPL runtime for UIQ smartphones is here.

Also, if you haven't already added it to your smartphone, you'll need to install the MediaServer Opx (OPL, eXtension, included in 'OPX-UIQ-050.sis'), which gives your smartphone extra sound-playing functions.

Please get feedback and reports of any bugs to me as soon as possible! If you get an error when it comes to playing digital sounds, see also the Support FAQ, below.

I've also done a detailed User Guide (fairwayguide.pdf, 156K) for Fairway. This was written for the Nokia 9200 series version of the program, but 99% of it also applies to the UIQ version.

If you're upgrading from a registered Psion version, note that your code will no longer work, due to Symbian's new Unicode character set. Contact me for a complimentary new code.

32-bit, Psion

Download the Psion Revo version here as fairway30.zip (157k)

Fairway 3.0 on Revo

The Series 5/5mx version was licensed commercially to Psion Computers for their Games Arcade, but is now available from me directly. Series 5 Golf was pitched for the slower Series 5 'classic' processor, but you can download patches here to get it to play properly on the faster Series 5mx etc.

From the review by John Woodthorpe: "Everything in Fairway/Series 5 Golf will be familiar to players of golf on other computer platforms. This is an ideal way to while away a few idle hours in airport departure lounges, on train journeys, etc., and a very good reason to buy the package - it's a splendid implementation."

16-bit, Psion

You can download Fairway for the 3a/c/mx directly from this web server as FAIR24.ZIP.

Note that if you use a Series 3mx, you'll need to switch your palmtop into 'SLOW' mode using Control-Diamond - otherwise the game will be unplayably fast!

There's also a version for the Psion Siena, requiring 65k of disk space and the same again of system memory when running. You can download a ZIP file here - sngolf10.zip.

Registering Fairway

See our registration page for full details of options and amounts (cheque/PayPal/credit card).

Other notes for Psion owners

The game is supplied (on the 16-bit version) with built-in support for 4 languages. English, French, Italian and German. The Revo version will be available in other languages if there's enough demand.

Happy golfing! Fairway is reckoned to be as difficult as the real game, so be prepared to do some serious practice!!

If you have the older Series 3 machine, there is still the older Fairway v1.0 to download, though note the registration details are all wrong now.

Support FAQ

This new section is designed to put forward the answers to some of the common questions I'm getting.

Crash when Fairway for UIQ starts to play a sound effect
Fairway 3.10 sometimes crashes and dies with "E32USER-CBASE Reason Number 21". This happens on some OPL installations and is thought to be to do with timing issues within the runtime. Can you try re-downloading Fairway 3.10a, and re-installing the official runtime and OPX package?

Let me know if this doesn't work, by emailing me with your smartphone's firmware version? See (AAS's support FAQ if you don't know how to do this). In the meantime, if you're affected and as a last resort, please run the game with sound turned off!
