Starting out - note the way each mini-bag's contents are kept
separate - see the main tips page.
Starting the build - the LEGO instructions are beautifully clear and
almost every step is spelled out. Just the occasional intuitive leap
needed, but then this is part of the 'Creator' series and it's expected
that you know what you're doing 8-)
Look at the attention to detail, here in the engine, which is only
ever seen if you open up the
tailgate!
Adding the longitudinal pieces starts to give an idea of the size of
the finished camper...
Starting to build the sides and place the floor...
Another shot of the engine, lit by flash inside a completed engine
bay, complete with hinged tailgate...
Above the engine bay is a bed section and joints on which the
rock'n'roll bed will fit...
Starting to add unit detail, in this case the sink and some
shelves...
Building up detail in the cab, starting with the footwells and
accelerator pedal, which actually depresses!
Attaching the main rock'n'roll bed - it swivels in two ways and you
can actually make it up as a bed or fold it back in sofa mode. Amazing
design. Note the little plant in the alcove, by the way...
Some more detail, just inside the opening doors (still at half
height here) - the sink now has water taps...
With the rear-facing seat (which also adjusts) in place too, here's
the clip on and folding table, complete with wine glass!
The cab doors go on, along with steering wheel...
Just to prove the concept, here's the rock'n'roll bed rocked and
err... rolled, for possible night time mode...
Starting to build up the lift-off roof section - this is the
sophisticated cantilevered rising roof mechanism. Which has to be used
to be appreciated - it's amazing.
With cloth surround in place and with the rising roof cap, along
with roof rack for surfboards and bikes...!
Working now on the clip-on front of the camper. Yes, I know I
intended to add real lights, but I opted to finish the camper as LEGO
intended, take my photos, and only then start taking some bits off to
fit the lights - just in case I messed up!!
Woohoo, the curtains are up! Building up the van's sides and nearing
completion now...
Fitting the main tailgate with 'glass'...
Fitting the wheels is the last action in the main build, along with
some wheel surrounds...
Eh voila! Done and looking pretty fine. And thankfully identical to
the picture on the box!! 8-)
Note the small pile of leftover bits - these are from a few of the
packs of very small bits and are presumably common to some other
models, which do use these.
With the main windscreen sections folded up. You can't do this on
modern campers!!
A side view and with the rising roof pushed down - all ready for the
open road!
That roof - it rises and falls so smoothly - great mechanical design
from the LEGO team.
An interior view, you can imagine yourself living in it. Well,
almost!
Some detail from the galley area - note the frying pan and washing up brush!
