Now, listen carefully. The VMIGO on its own
isn't bad - the software's nicely designed, as is the game mechanics and
mini-games, but you can do more and do it with ten times the style if you
make sure you get the docking station/console as well. By plugging into
standard composite connectors on the side/back of any TV, your VMIGO handheld
then drives a full colour screen, with extra graphics, extra functions, digital
music, etc.
Just as your phone or
PDA syncs to your PC, being able to dock the VMIGO with a TV-based console
more than doubles its worth. Take my word for it. See the photo above for
proof!
Some tips for getting started with your VMIGO
when you get home:
- The included instruction leaflet (scanned
here in case you lost yours!) can be thought of
as a quick reference guide - it's very brief and many things will have to be
learnt through trial and error. Luckily, many mini-games and functions have
on-screen context sensitive help.
- Many functions may seem 'missing' until you
realise that the 'A' menu is location-sensitive - it will only show
functions appropriate to each location. Thus, you can send your pet to sleep in
the living room and out for a wee in the garden 8-) Don't worry, you'll get the
hang of it all. And you can learn as your puppy grows up....
- One of the standout features on the
VMIGO is the built-in pedometer. Not that children are normally
interested in such things, but they are interested in earning 'points' so that
they can buy things for their pet. Activate 'Walk mode', clip the pod onto
their pocket or belt and they get a point for every metre they walk! Finally, a
virtual pet that encourage your children to get out more!! Very
neat.
- One thing that may catch you out is when
your puppy gets poorly. This is often triggered by letting two of the
Mood indicators both get to zero at the same time. And the only cure seems to
be a visit to the 'Vet', asking for him to 'Heal' the puppy. Usually does the
trick though.
- Read your mail! The game sends you
real time tips on what to think about next (e.g. "Your dog is ill" - see above
tip!), plus special offers from the store and fun emails to make the VMIGO even
more enjoyable. Make sure you check your mail every day!
- Note that on the B/'Pod' menu, there's a
full Calendar function, allowing children to put in alarms for times on
specific days. A useful first step on the path to organising their own
lives?
- It's well worth noting that, in between
mini-games and shopping(!), keeping the VMIGO dog happy means quite a lot of
feeding, grooming and toilet handling - this is excellent subliminal
training for your children, in terms of them being aware of how much work a
real pet will be.
