It is best to backup and remove all batteries. Check the sell-by date when purchasing them (especially when buying in bulk) Avoid NiCads as they can die suddenly as opposed to gradually (more strain on the backup battery)@AThe settings for the different network services are stored in a ISP database file, this file is called ISP_DB.DAT and is located in the C:\System\Data\ folder. Is it worth saving a few dollars?Anyhow, if you review the 'Consumption' tip you will find that your Psion uses power even when turned off. No surprise when you consider that it has no physical switch off mechanism and must be in a permanent standby state so as to switch back on for alarms. Also, the batteries are used to maintain the contents of the RAM.Therefore, buying a PSU for your desk and leaving it plugged in over night will save you battery life and also make sure you never miss an alarm due to poor batteries.PSUs are also great when carrying out power drain activities like transferring things via the serial port to a PC (usually done at a desk anyway).ou add a new entry to the datafile.lled "1".e.g. C:\1\1\1\etc..What Ifound was that these directories took up approximately 5k of space. You can now run Spell with the new language dictionary... I want to use 2 dictionaries and switch from one to the otherFollow the same procedure as above (copying the 3 files to c:\system\data). Use the excellent freeware SwitchTask by Pascal NICOLAS. Where are the dictionary and the Thesaurus files located? The dictionary files are located in the folder z:\system\data of your ROM drive (Z). You can find here an explaination on how to access your ROM drive...Which files are involved? The first file to look at is 'z:\system\data\Lexicon.rsc'. This file contains references to 2 files : the dictionary and the thesaurus. Take a file viewer and note the name of these two files. The names of these files is dependent of the language of your series 5 : On the english version, they are called IENS9522.dat and REKTC400.dat. On the French version, they are called IFRF9531.dat and RFRTC450.dat. The number in these file names are just revision number and can therefore differ from machine to machine, i.e. the general naming format should be I***????.dat for the dictionary and R**TC???.dat with '*' language code and '?' revision number (to be confirmed). Thesaurus or not thesaurus ?Some version (French or Dutch for instance) only have two files, the thesaurus (R**TC???.dat) is missing. The reason seems to be a problem of ROM space, Psion probably had to make a choice between a bigger help file (around +160K compared to English) and the thesaurus (was it the right choice ?). ProblemsThere are a number of different problems: You can launch your second dictionary from WORD, but you can't add new words to the personal dictionary... There are some sample programs in your Psion's ROM, which you can look at by pressing Ctrl+Tab from the system screen and selecting drive Z: Look in \system\opl for Demo and TBarApp. The UseNet newsgroup for Psion programmers is comp.sys.psion.programmer You may want to read this regularly to see if you can pick up some tips from what other people are talking about and find out what is going on in Psion programmer land in general. You can post questions there asking for help, BUT FIRST make sure the answer is not in the manual. I'm sure I'm not the only reader on the group who finds it annoying having to answer questions by quoting the manual, it must be somewhat embarrassing for the questioner as well. :) Also; it's good form to prefix the subject line of a posting with something like [S5 OPL], this means that people who don't use a Series 5 or OPL can quickly skip the post. It also prevents you getting replies that are only relevant to the Series 3 or another Psion product.ATry this:Start WebSave the home page to #anything.htm (use any filename you like, it must start with #)Select File Open file... and select any .HTM file starting with the character #Web now shows you the contents of your disk/directory where the file was saved! You can navigate around the directory, and even save the displayed text as a HTML file by using File More Save as...This is a great feature, and allows you to use Web as a local file browser.~AThere is a known limitation in Email which causes this problem, if your network timeout period is more than around 30 minutes. You can obtain this through several methods: Take an existing Series 3x icon (48x48 pixels in size with a .PIC or .ICO extension), and use PsiWin 1.0 or 1.1 to convert it to a Windows .BMP file.Draw a new icon yourself in a drawing program on a Series 3x, and convert as above.Draw a new icon in a PC paint package, and save it directly as a Windows .BMP.Draw the icon in Sketch and use the Export option to save it as an EPOC picture file. It will be given an .MBM extension so will then need to be copied to a PC and converted back to a Windows .BMP. As you can see, this last method is a bit tortuous! Creating a Program IconNow you have created your basic icon, you need to prepare it for use with your program. 1. The Series 5 uses 3 sizes of icon for the system screen (one for each of the 3 zoom levels), each of which also has an associated mask. To explain:The icons are sized 48x48, 32x32 and 24x24 pixels. You can use just one 48x48 icon and let the Series 5 automatically scale the icon to the smaller sizes itself as the screen is zoomed. This may be acceptable for some styles of icon, but it loses resolution. The more reliable and recommended method (described below) is to create the 3 sizes of icon yourself from the master and optimise each for the size. Each icon must be supplied in 2 forms : the picture and its mask. A 'mask' is just a silhouette of the icon itself, all in black, that allows EPOC32 to mask out the screen background where the icon is situated. i.e. it lets white areas of the icon stay white. Without the mask they would be transparent and let the background screen colour show through (e.g. the EPOC logo).2. Use a PC paint program (Paint Shop Pro is an extremely good choice, and for it's shareware price, very reasonable) to create the required bitmaps from the master icon as follows. Make sure the icons are all saved as Windows bitmaps (.BMP), subtype RGB encoded, with 4 bits/pixel and max 16 colours. In my JWIN for EPOC32 program, the icon file has been left with the original 3 colours it had in it's Series 3 form - black, white and grey. However, it is possible to add another shade of grey, as 4 colours are routinely used in the Series 5. Note though, that we haven't always had success with using 4 colours as one grey shade sometimes gets lost in doing the conversion (the reason hasn't yet been tracked down).3. Start by taking the original 48x48 icon and use "Save As" with the name xxxxx48.bmp (xxxxx being any name of your choice). All these names are optional, but this is an efficient system for simplicity and organisation. Basically though, as long as you know what they are called for use in step 11, anything is OK!4. Use this icon (xxxxx48.bmp) and, for all areas enclosed by the outline of the actual icon, fill in with black - i.e. replace all grey and white pixels within the icon and make it into a silhouette. This will be the mask that EPOC32 requires. Save it as xxxxx48m.bmp. If you're still not sure about what a mask should look like, see the example pictures later on this page.5. Take the xxxxx48.bmp again and resize it to 32x32. Then tweak and touch it up until it looks good again. This is very subjective, but you'll have to lose some detail and simplify it for the smaller size. When done, save it as xxxxx32.bmp.6. Repeat Step 4 on icon xxxxx32.bmp to make its mask and save it as xxxxx32m.bmp.7. Take the xxxxx48.bmp again and resize it to 24x24. Once again, tweak and touch it up until it looks good! When done, save it as xxxxx24.bmp.8. Repeat Step 4 on icon xxxxx24.bmp and save it as xxxxx24m.bmp.9. You should now have 6 bitmap files: xxxxx48.bmp xxxxx48m.bmp xxxxx32.bmp xxxxx32m.bmp xxxxx24.bmp xxxxx24m.bmp To make things a bit clearer (especially concerning the masks), these images are the ones used to make the program icon for JWIN for EPOC32: Image/Size Normal Icon: Icon Mask:48x48 32x32 24x24 10. Copy the BMCONV.EXE program to this directory (you can delete it again from here after use), or make sure the program is within one of the PATHS specified in your Autoexec.bat file.11. You can run this program by specifying the each of the output and input files on the command line (Tip: execute BMCONV without any parameters to see the usage instructions). However it is easier to use Windows Notepad (or another text editor) to create a simple command file as follows: xxxxx.mbmxxxxx48.bmpxxxxx48m.bmpxxxxx32.bmpxxxxx32m.bmpxxxxx24.bmpxxxxx24m.bmp The following points apply to the file you've created: The first line xxxxx.mbm is the filename you are going to create for the Series 5, i.e. the BMCONV output file. The next 6 lines are the bitmap icons you've created, and will be the input files for BMCONV. It makes sense to list them in the sequence above (48 icon, 48 mask, 32 icon, 32 mask, 24 icon, 24 mask). However, as long as the icons are in pairs, the order should not make any difference to the final file, although this (as of yet) has not been checked.A very important thing to note - there must be a carriage return (ENTER) on the last line, such that the cursor moves to the next and last line of the file. The program fails to run without this linefeed.12. Now, save this file as (for example) "MAKE.TXT" in the directory with the icons and BMCONV.13. In Windows '95/NT 4.0, use Start|Programs|MS-DOS Prompt and then in the DOS window navigate to the directory which holds the icons and the text file you created. At the DOS prompt enter: BMCONV MAKE.TXTThe BMCONV program should then run and tell you the following: CompilingMultiple bitmap store type: File storePsion file: xxxxx.mbmBitmap file 1: xxxxx48.bmpBitmap file 2: xxxxx48m.bmpBitmap file 3: xxxxx36.bmpBitmap file 4: xxxxx36m.bmpBitmap file 5: xxxxx24.bmpBitmap file 6: xxxxx24m.bmpSuccess You should now have a file called xxxxx.mbm in the same directory! If it fails you've probably got a filename wrong. 14. To use this new MBM, copy it from your working directory to where you're developing your program (i.e. either a Series 5 machine or the relevant WINS directory). Then, make the relevant call to it in the APP...ENDA section of OPL. This will appear something like: APP AppName,AppUid&ICON "C:\CodePath\IconName.mbm"ENDA Extracting Icons from MBM filesThe above instructions deal with icon conversion/creation. However, you will obviously want to create MBM files for toolbars or other uses in your programs. The same principals apply, but here are a few more useful pointers... 1. Toolbar icons are 24x24 in size.2. A lot of toolbar icons you may not need to draw from scratch! You could copy one of the ROM application's MBM files to your local disk, to use the pictures it contains - if you don't know how, a very simple OPL program like this will do it (simply enter the path of the jMBM file you want manually then re-translate): PROC CopyFromRom:COPY "Z:\SYSTEM\APPS\WORD\WORD.MBM","C:\OPL"PRINT "File copied OK.GETENDPThere is also a far easier way, thanks to a program I mentioned at the top of this page called MBMView by Lieuwe de Vries. This will allow you to view and save any embedded picture from any MBM file (including those on the ROM)! 3. Once you have the file on your local disk, copy it to the PC and do a reverse BMCONV to extract the Window bitmaps from the MBM file. You can do this the easy way by creating a file similar to the "MAKE.TXT" example above, only use something like this: /U WORD.MBMREV_00.BMPREV_01.BMPREV_02.BMPREV_03.BMP........ (Insert a new line for every new .BMP here!)REV_100.BMP 4. Save the file as "REV_MBM.TXT" (or whatever you want). Once again, either copy BMCONV.EXE to the directory where the new text file and MBM file are, or make sure the program is in your PATH's. After that, simply run it by typing this at the DOS command prompt: BMCONV REV_MBM.TXTThat's it! You then end up with the specified number of .BMP files which contain corresponding icons extracted from the multiple MBM file. If BMCONV runs out of MBM's to decompile, it will stop with an error message, but you will find that it has created the .BMP files for all the icons present. There's no way of telling how many .BMP files will be produced, so some trial and error is required - if all 100 files output without BMCONV failing it's probably certain that there are more in the file! 5. View all the .BMPs in your PC paint package, or preferably use some sort of "Thumbnail" function (again, Paint Shop Pro comes in very handy here), to find out what they all are.6. Once you've sorted through all the BMP files you've got, and have found some you want to use in your toolbar, you can either use them as is, or modify them to suit your program's purposes. Use exactly the same method as described at the beginning to make one big MBM with them all in.7. You don't actually need to bother creating the silhouette masks for each icon, as they work fairly successfully without. When you load the icons to your toolbar in OPL, just load the same icon index in twice (once as the icon and again as the mask).8. However, better results can be obtained by creating an equivalent silhouette mask for each toolbar icon. This will allow white areas of the icon to stay white, and not be transparent and let the grey background of the buttons show through. Something else worth pointing out is that when making icons for the toolbar or even when you're combining bigger pictures into one MBM to load from within your program, the order in which you list them in the "MAKE.TXT" file will be the order they appear within the MBM file. The indexing starts from 0, so the gLOADBIT command to load the first icon must point to 0. One final, useful point to note is that the MBM file holding your program icon does not need to be distributed with your app (its details are stored in the resultant .AIF file which OPL32 generates). However, the MBM that contains your toolbar icons/other program pictures must be distrubuted with your program, and you've got to use gLOADBIT when you want to show the bitmaps/icons it contains.$0Sketch./\(./C?TOPU?UUCTPUUU1?@P1OCS?TP?UO5 ?S50CT0 5?U 0P5O3 CSE0<< BClove TechnologyTel: 01202 302796Fax: 01202 30041943 Springbank RoadBournemouthBH7 7EL100255.3642@compuserve.comwww.clove-tech.co.ukAll stuff Psion.Planet PFundpfund@uni2a.unige.chwww.geocities.com/SiliconValley/8130/Psion accessories.Purple Software LtdTel: 0171 387 7777Fax: 0171 387 1188PO Box 7535LondonNW1 2WFpurple_software@compuserve.comwww.purplesoft.comSoftwareSystemslink Two LtdTel: 01234 711220Fax: 01234 240256Supplies top quality leather cases for the Psion range of computersWidget SoftwareTel: 01438 815444Fax: 01438 815222121 London RoadKnebworthHertforshideSG3 6EXinfo@widget.co.ukwww.widget.co.ukWidget sell a whole array of Psion equipment and software. The ISP file contains settings for the ISP, and the user can simply load the settings directly from the ISP file, he does not have to enter anything by hand.Basic File FormatInternet Service Provider (.ISP) files are standard ASCII plain text files. They can be generated by any standard text editor, and also on the Series 5 itself (using Word and exporting with File | More | Export as text file...).File ContentThe .ISP file contains the following fields, with each field being on a new line. If a field is not present, then the default value is used...Service Connection type = DirectAccount Ask before connecting = checkedAddresses Get IP address from server = checked Get DNS address from server = checkedLogin Port settings = 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bitNAME:The provider name identifies the service provider in the Network control on the Control panel. This field must be supplied. The name should therefore not be too long, around 20 characters (depending upon character width) will fit nicely in the dialog, e.g. NAME:SuperNet PlusNUM:The number is the main telephone number used to access the service provider. To allow the the Series 5 to intelligently dial the correct number independent of location, the number should be entered in international format, preceded by a + and the national and area codes are seperated by a space, e.g. NUM:+41 800 123456This will dial an 0800 number (123456) in Switzerland. If no NUM is specified, the settings default to Connection type = Direct.DNS1:DNS2:The primary (and secondary, if used) DNS addresses. If DNS1 and DNS2 are not specified, the settings default to Get DNS address from server. Ensure the correct DNS address is entered, eg: DNS1:194.127.0.18 DNS2:194.127.1.10PORT:The port settings can be either 8N1 (8 data bits, No parity, 1 stop bit), or 7E1 (7 data bits, Even parity, 1 stop bit). Most providers use 8N1. eg: PORT:8N1If PORT is not specified the settings default to 8N1.LSCR:(followed by login script starting on next line)If a specific logon script (LSCR) is required, it can be entered here. Psion have obviously tried to cover the majority of providers with their generic logon script (which is called when no specific LSCR script is specified). Some providers (CompuServe, PsionWorld) will require special logon scripts. The logon script is taken as starting on the line directly after the LSCR: identifier, and continuing until the end of the file (or until another command is recognised??).If no LSCR is supplied, the Use login script check box is not checked and the generic login script is used.Jochen Siegenthaler "Arial "Arial "Arial "Arial;, ! &'4.7J 61E "Arial"Word.app CiCJ iF*Dhi "Arial$`Q4P{q Mʩv kE-mail & Connection LogsChris Farrow 3.1 "Arial VPPuLK"Arial"Using Web as a local File Browser?"!"ArialJochen Siegenthalera"Arial"Arial3.1iXk "Arial'0/ "ArialFix 'No Dialtone' ProblemJochen Siegenthaler3.1j~w "ArialY$# "Arial&Email crashes with reason number = 87:&% "Arial Jochen Siegenthaler3.1np "Arial\o/. Right click on any troublesome file type (e.g. if Word files always automatically convert to MS Word - right click on a Word file) and select 'Change' and then 'Display choice of converters when copying'.DAlthough it is fairly simple to manually install things on your Psion, software authors would be better thought of if they created an optional install script. This would allow programs to be installed by simply selecting the script.Sounds tricky - forget it - it's so simple!Firstly, if you don't have PsiWin 2.1, you'll need a program called PsiSetup (http://www.rmrsoft.com). If you don't have PsiWin 2.1 though, get it now @ www.psion.com.Right, an install script will look like this:[PATHWHEREFILESSHOULDGO]FILENAMEE.g.,[\SYSTEM\APPS\PROGNAME\]PROGNAME.APP[\SYSTEM\APPS\PROGNAME\]PROGNAME.AIF[\SYSTEM\APPS\PROGNAME\]PROGNAME.MBM[\SYSTEM\APPS\PROGNAME\]PROGNAME.DAT[\SYSTEM\APPS\PROGNAME\]PROGNAME.HLP[\SYSTEM\OPX\]SYSRAM1.OPX[\DOCUMENTS\]READMENB: Any directories that don't exist will be created. Remember to set it back to 115200 when finished.Call the file NAME.SISgA'Use the force..."To activate the auto-compact feature of the Data app, sort the database twice (after each other).(NB - this won't work when the database is already compacted and you may have to sort more than twice. To use Voice Memos under these conditions do the following. Before closing down press the external record button until the machine bleeps. The Record application is launched but is labelled as 'Voice notes'. Now switch off. The Network icon gives access to the settings needed by the Series 5 to establish a network connection. A network connection can be a direct connection to a local network in an office environment (via WinNT 4.0 SP3 RAS) or a dial-up connection to a office network or an internet service provider. The Network icon is added to the Control panel when Message Suite is installed for the first time. The Psion Series 5 can store many different settings for different network connections. Each network connection is called a network service, and one network service is always the Current network service -there is only one serial port, and thus only one network service can be current, but you can change the Current network service at any time from the Network icon in the Control panel. Most people will think of the network service settings as being the settings needed to connect to their ISP (Internet Service Provider) for email and web browsing using the Message Suite software's Email and Web programs, however it is important to remember that these settings are really there to build a network connection.Once a network connection has been made, a program can use the connection to do a certain task or number of tasks.Where are the Settings for the Network Services stored? The settings for the different network services are stored in a ISP database file, this file is called ISP_DB.DAT and is located in the C:\System\Data\ folder. When you edit a network service, you are editing an entry in the ISP_DB.DAT datafile. When you add a new network service, you add a new entry to the datafile. If the datafile is empty or does not exist, then the Network control in the Control panel will automatically load network settings from any ISP files found in the C:\System\Data\ directory the next time the control is opened. This is a good reason to store any ISP files in C:\System\Data\. If no ISP files exist in C:\System\Data\, and no network services have yet been setup, then the Current network service shows .Adding a new Network ServiceBefore you can use any program that requires a network service (eg: Email or Web), you must correctly define and configure the network service. Here is a step-by-step procedure to add a new network service from a given ISP file:From the System screen, open the Control panel from the toolbar (or select it from the Tools menu).Double-tap the Network icon (or highlight it and press Enter).Tap New (or press Ctrl-N) to create a new Network service setting.Change the Based upon line to display Settings from file.On the Name line select the name of the appropriate ISP file. Note that the default disk and folder is C:\, if the ISP file exists on your Series 5 somewhere other than C:\ then you will have to change the Disk and Folder lines accordingly.Tap OK (or press Enter). If you do not have an ISP file for your network service, then you can make the new service Based upon either the Generic settings or upon the Current network service. Now that you have added a new network service, the next step is to ensure that at the very least the Standard phone number is correct for your location. You may also wish to check all other items as shown below:Editing a Network ServiceBefore you use a new network service, you must check (and edit if required) the network service settings. NOTE: To open the Edit network service dialog, open the Network control, select the desired network service to edit, and tap Edit (or press Ctrl+E) on the Network service settings dialog. Many of the items can be pre-defined in an ISP file. This is noted as appropriate for each setting below.Service pageName can be left unaltered. This is simply the name of the network service (eg: your Internet Service Provider). If you wish to change it, you may do so, but be aware that only about 20 characters can be nicely displayed on the Series 5 Network service settings dialog..If you loaded the settings from an ISP file, then the Name will already be given.Connection type is always Dial-up for a modem connection. Direct is only used if you have connected directly to a suitable server (eg: WinNT RAS).If you loaded the settings from an ISP file, then the Connection type is normally set to Dial-up.Use smart dialling is only relevant if you travel and wish to connect to the same phone number from your various locations. Smart dialling ensures that the country and area code are dialled correctly if required. If you loaded the settings from an ISP file, then Use smart dialling will normally be ticked.Standard phone number is the phone number that the Series 5 will dial to connect to your network. You must know the phone number you need, and you must ensure that it is entered correctly here.If you loaded the settings from an ISP file, then a Standard phone number will normally be given, but you must check it and make sure it is correct.Other phone numbers can also be entered, but are normally not required. If you wish to enter some, then I recommend you first setup some locations. This is under further study - I wish to try and understand the best way to use other phone numbers. If you loaded the settings from an ISP file, then there are normally no Other phone numbers.Account pageAsk before connecting will force you to enter your username and password at each and every connection. This is very secure (no-one can find out your password) but it is a nuisance if you connect many times a day. If you wish to store the username and password on the Series 5 so that you do not have to enter it at each connection, then do not tick Ask before connecting, and enter a Username and Password on the lines below. If you loaded the settings from an ISP file, then Ask before connecting will be ticked. Change as desired.Username is the username (case-sensitive!) for the network service. This will have been asssigned to you by your service provider.CompuServe users please note: you must enter your numerical user ID. The registered alias will not work.If you loaded the settings from an ISP file, then no Username will be provided. Enter as required.Password is the password (case-sensitive!) as assigned by the service provider. If you loaded the settings from an ISP file, then no Password will be provided. Enter as required.CompuServe users please note: you must enter your normal CompuServe password. Do not enter your POP3 mailbox password.Confirm password by entering your password again. If you loaded the settings from an ISP file, then no Confirm password will be provided. Enter as required.Addresses pageGet IP address from server is normally ticked for most network services. Very few service providers assign you a unique IP address, but if they do, then untick this box and enter the IP address in the line below. If you loaded the settings from an ISP file, then Get IP address from server will be correctly set. Do not change.IP address is your unique, permanent, IP address as assigned by your service provider. Most service providers use dynamic IP addresses, whereby the Series 5 must get the IP address from the server each time when connecting (see also above). If you loaded the settings from an ISP file, then your IP address will not be given. If Get IP address from server is not ticked, then you must enter your IP address.Get DNS address from server is normally ticked. Most service providers allow the Series 5 to ask for the DNS address each time it connects. Some service providers however have fixed DNS addresses; if your provider has informed you of the DNS address(es), then untick this box and enter them below. If you loaded the settings from an ISP file, then Get DNS address from server will be correctly set. Do not change.Primary DNS address is the address of the first DNS server. If your service provider has told you this, then enter it here. If an address is already entered, then do not change it unless you know what you are doing. If you loaded the settings from an ISP file, then the Primary DNS address will be correctly set. Do not change.Secondary DNS address is the address of the second DNS server. If your service provider has told you this, then enter it here. If an address is already entered, then do not change it unless you know what you are doing. If you loaded the settings from an ISP file, then the Secondary DNS address will be correctly set. Do not change.Login pagePort settings are normally 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit for most service providers. Some service providers will require 7 data bits, even parity, 1 stop bit to get the login script to recognise the prompts. If you loaded the settings from an ISP file, then the Port settings will be correctly set. Do not change.Use login script allows the Message Suite to use a supplementary script to connect to the service provider. Most modern service providers do not require you to use a login script, and if you have not ticked this box, then the Series 5 will attempt to open a PPP connection immediately after the remote modem has reported a CONNECT. Some modern service providers require however that a specific login procedure is used, and this can be catered for in the login script. Normally the ISP will tell you what is required. If you are unsure, then ask me.Warning: if you remove the tick from Use login script and then close the dialog with Done, any prior script will be deleted. Should you then re-tick the Use login script box at a later date, the generic script will be displayed. If you loaded the settings from an ISP file, then Use login script will be correctly set. Do not change the setting, and do not change the script (if supplied). It does not update PsiWin 2.1 to PsiWin 2.2 PsiWin 2.1 Service Release 1 addresses a number of issues, outlined below: Synchronization under Windows NT with 'non-admin' access rights: You can now create synchronization tasks and synchronize information when logged on to any PC running Windows NT, regardless of your access rights. Labels containing symbols and accented characters: Converting or synchronizing a Data file now preserves all characters in the database labels. Data files containing labels of type 'Memo' : You can now convert all characters stored in Data labels of type 'Memo'. The 255 character limit no longer applies. Only users who have experienced the problems described above, or who are likely to experience them, need to download this update. Installing Service Release 1 Unzip the file to a temporary folder, e.g. C:\Temp Double-click on the file Setup.exe and follow the instructions to complete the installation. You can use PsiWin/Service Release 1 straight away. It is not necessary to restart your PC. Removing PsiWin / Service Release 1 If you need to uninstall PsiWin for any reason, you must remove the Service Release first. To do this, select Settings|Control Panel from the Start menu, select the Add/Remove Programs icon and highlight PsiWin Service Release 1. Click the Add/Remove button. Then make sure this does not overlap with the margin settings (so that the bottom margin should be set at say 5cm if you have a large footer.Check this looks OK in the preview page and then it should print ok.(I think that's right but don't have my printer here to check - basically keep playing around with the distance from bottom margin and the bottom margin settings until it works!)rKI have been using Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMHy) rechargeable batteries with my Series 5 for several months now, and this brief article includes some comments which people considering this may find useful. This article follows on from a report I wrote some time ago, studying the various types of AA batteries available for the Series 5 (eg. Alkaline, NiMHy). In the original report I carried out numerous tests to determine which AA battery provided the best lifetime for the Series 5. My conclusion was that the NiMHy battery provided a long 'use-time', and unlike older Nickel-Cadmium rechargeables they do not suffer fom 'memory effects' whichcan reduce their effectiveness.I now know that this study was slightly flawed due to a recent discovery I have made regarding rechargeble batteries. This is based on the way rechargeable batteries work.In order to replenish their charge, rechargeable batteries allow a 'tricklecurrent' to flow through them whilst they are in the charger. This is why the rate of charging is related to the type of charger used, as the current flow is dictated by the charger. When NiMHy's are used in the Series 5, they behave normally during standarduse. The issue arises when the MAINS power supply is plugged in and poweredup. If you are using NiMHy batteries AND a mains adaptor, because the batteries allow a 'trickle current' to flow through them, the batteries will actually CHARGE-UP in situ. This sounds like an excellent idea, except that the Series 5 was not (I think) designed to work this way.I initially found this when I picked up my Psion and found that that batterycompartment had become VERY VERY HOT. I checked the battery status, andfound that the current set of NiMHy's had lasted 39 hrs and was still at 2.8V!The recommendation from Psion is that you change your NiMHy's to alkalineswhilst using the mains adaptor! Not a particularly useful solution.I have been using the mains adaptor without problems for several months now,but I do check the battery status regularly. If the battery approaches FULL Voltage (~2.8V for most NiMHy's) then it is IMPORTANT that the mains adaptoris removed/turned off. If this is not done then you risk damage to both the Psion and the batteries.Aside from this, there appears to be no down-side to using these batteries, and they have the added advantage of automatically re-charging during timespent on main power....everyone's a winner! In conclusion, NiMHy batteries are an ideal way of reducing the cost of running your Series 5, but if you tend to use your Psion on mains power MOST of the time, then it is probably more hassle than it is worth. For users who have a balance of time spent 'mobile' and on mains power, then the situation is ideal for NiMHy's. For those who never use mains power, and who travel a lot without access to a charger then good quality alkalines (eg. Duracell) are still the best option.GAidan Foley BE CEng MIChemE (the list of qualifications are important for this tip) has submitted the following, and slightly unorthodox tip for extending the life of batteries! Here's the tip as written by Aidan:'Try taking the batteries out. Give them a good chew, either with your back teeth or a pair of pliers, to put a series of small dents all over the surface. (Usually about six chews per battery does for me). But not enough to damage the overall shape or puncture the casing. (To avoid leakage and damage to your Psion or any other device). Ideal for getting out of a spot of bother. Of course: No liability will be accepted for losses of any kind, (including teeth, dentures, electrical equipment, taste etc).I'm 'currently' at 345mAh extra above the 719mAh I had when I got my first warning, and no second warning yet. This is typical. (That's approaching 50% extra!).'Editors Comment: If you're like me, you'll probably think this tip is a wind up. However, there is an explanation which Aidan has kindly provided.'All reactions go faster when well mixed. For example everyone who adds sugar to warm drinks stirs to speed up the dissolving, and petrol is well mixed with air in carburettors. Industrial reaction systems use pumps, agitators or turbulent flow patterns to make sure reactions proceed under control.Batteries work by bringing together two compatible half cells to provide a potential difference. In dry cells there are solid and liquid reactants. The bulk is solid in a dry cell (unlike liquid sulfuric acid in cars lead-acid battery). Solids are difficult to mix well, and in a 'tired' battery just a little mixing makes all the difference and provide extra life. I provide this by a quick chew, just enough to put small dents in the surface of the battery. (An alternative is to put the battery on a radiator overnight - a trick I used as a kid - this works because all reactions go faster when heated up).Ed: So there you go.....@A CF-card can be formatted using your psion, but that gives no control over cluster-size. Cluster-size is a?n important factor in 'wasted space' and write-speed on a CF-disk. The smaller the clusters, the less wasted space, the slower writing to the disk (reading speed doesn't seem affected...).Commercially available software (Essential Disk Utilities) does give options in choosing cluster size. For Psion-users without this software, but who can read the CF-disk as an IDE-drive (in a PCMCIA-adapter) on a Windows 95 OSR/2 machine can use the following trick:The program FORMAT supplied with THIS version of Windows 95 has an undocumented option /Z:n which controls cluster-size.Cluster size in bytes = n * 512. So to format with 2048 byte clusters and the CF in drive E: type in a DOS-box: FORMAT /Z:4 E:A cluster size of 1024 can be read by the Psion, but gives the wrong amount of free memory (too much). 2048 would be a better choice.I can't guarantee that this works for all sizes, brands, cluster sizes (mine is a STI 32MB with 2048 cluster size). I take no responsibility for loss of data etc. etc. Please be careful (backup: always a good idea when formatting a drive. ;-)BMy psion folder tree is getting huge, and as most people find, navigating around while trying to load a file is either through the little letterbox, or by waiting ages for the psion to scan the whole directory tree on either the C or D drive.Well... I just discovered yesterday that if you tap the first letter of the directory you want to look in, the psion will move through the possible matches ones one by one, so, for example:If I want to load c:\documents\personal\manu\notes\CS1211\981109 into word, then I can click File | Open, and then tap the letter C until the correct directory comes up! Fantastic! hope this helps someone.BFor Navigator Users: This tip is especially relevant for today - it was passed to me by Contact! author Tim Richardson whilst sitting on the train back from London to Colchester from the UK Psion Meet!!!So, here goes. One of the principal problems for Navigator users is the access to things like the Remote Link and Control Panel. Whilst programs such as NavPro do a good job, this is an excellent tip!The System screen can be accessed directly, just by using the following. Open up the applications Window in Navigator. You will find one of the applications is "System". Drag this to the desktop. Now, highlight the the System icon now on your desktop. Use Ctrl + P to access the properties and assign a shortcut key as appropriate (e.g. Shift + S).BAfter "loosing" the battle with my IT service provider (is there such a thing) to get PsiWin installed as an upgrade to the Psion Manager that was available, I decided to try something else. I configured the comms and on the PC hyperterminal such that they would talk to each other and now can transfer files back and forth between PC and Psion5. This allowed me to upgrade Psion5 software much quicker then having to wait with the software on a disk. (I work offshore and have no access to PsiWin which is at home). Sofar totally flawless, simple, and as long as there is no requirement for files to be converted or printed this can be used on any PC with out PsiWin!RATo export data from Sheet just select the array you want to export and copy it; then paste it in Word : you get tab delimitate text. The easiest way to do this is to create a DOS batchfile called "EpocPrint.Bat" on your Windows95 desktop. Inside it put just the single line Copy C:\epoc32\wins\c\printfile lpt1: (Change the drive and printer port letters if necessary). It is now easy to print from the emulator. Simply print to file using the driver that is most appropriate for your printer (the emulator will default to using file "printfile" in the root of the virtual internal disk), and double-click on the batchfile on your desktop.EMost shareware and freeware programs are written in OPL/32 and can be made to work with the EPOC emulator with a modicum of effort. If you can't find this file, either grab it here or just create a new "Program" document in any folder and use the "Create standard files" command. Toolbar.opo will then magically appear in the current folder and can be copied across to \epoc32\release\wins\deb\z\system\opl. Sysram1.opxAlthough there is a file of the same name compiled for the ARM chip in the Series 5, the compiled-for-PC version you may need for the emulator can be downloaded here: 3lib.ukonline.co.uk/find/sysram1.opxPut a copy of it in \epoc32\wins\c\system\opx. It's worth noting that there are several other common OPXes that have been written by third-parties. Many of them have now been compiled for the PC by their authors and are available. Try the RMR Software (www.rmrsoft.com) web site first for these. Again, just place the modified OPX files in the same folder as Sysram1.opx above. See John McAleely's web site for more up-to-date OPX news:www.mcaleely.com/psion/OPX/Once you've set up your PC-compiled OPXes in the correct folder, make them 'Read-Only' before going any further. You can even reverse the polarity by inserting the jack plug into the end of the lead the opposite way round (so it should work on Series 3 machines as well). The output of the unit is selectable and can be set to 6V DC (the same as the standard units) and the current is 800mA max with a 1 Amp fuse compared to 1Amp with a 2 Amp fuse on the standard units, so the Psion is well protected. One MAJOR benefit of the Maplin unit, apart from the price, is the jack plug has a 90 degree bend, just like the Psion Mains Adapter, so the lead disappears neatly to the rear of the Psion. A lot easier than trying to get your own signature in sketch.AIf you still have V1.0 or 1.1 (can't I persuade you to upgrade??) and have difficulty when using a Shiva Internet router (either via your corporate network or your ISP), visit Psion's website (www.psion.com) and download (go to their free download page) the 'Router Upgrade' patch. The problem presents itself as problems keeping a connection open, e.g. a connection is established but then dropped a few moments later.DTo quickly access your backed-up files in the EPOC emulator under Windows 95/98: just add a line SET _EPOC_DRIVE_P=c:\Psion\Your Name\Backup\Internal to your PC's C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT and reboot. The next time (and every other time) you start the Emulator, you'll see a new disk drive ("P").This tip works well for your CF disk as well, I've set mine to be the "Q" drive with SET _EPOC_DRIVE_Q=c:\Psion\Steve Litchfield\Backup\Steve. If you do access your backups from within the Emulator and want to make changes to any file, it's probably a good idea to copy the file to the "C" drive first. Doing this will stop PsiWin complaining about you tampering with its backup dates and times! To do the same under Windows NT4, which doesn't use autoexec.bat etc, use the following procedure, sent in by Jeff Gaste: In "My Computer": -Click on Control Panel icon -Click on System icon -Click on Environment tab On the last but one line (Variable) type _EPOC_DRIVE_P (where P will appear as additional drive on your Psion emulator etc.) On the last line input the Value of the path, e.g. H:\Psion5\Jeff\Backup\Internal Click, then "Set" and OK it. You may, of course, set up different 'drives'.BIt's not strictly possible on the Psion however if you have access to email....There are two PDF conversion email addresses that can be used to convert PDF files to a form that is more accessible to screen reading software. The first mail address, pdf2html@adobe.com, converts PDF documents to HTML. The second mail address, pdf2txt@adobe.com, converts PDF documents to ASCII text. To use either of these mail addresses, simply enter the URL to the PDF file you wish to convert into the body of a mail message, and send it to the desired mailbox.Use pdf2html@adobe.com to convert a PDF to HTMLUse pdf2txt@adobe.com to convert a PDF to ASCII text$CI got frustrated with an Agenda I bought which had objects inserted for various dates, and I had to go through all the rigmarole of opening the entry, going to "more", highlighting the object and then editing it. Stupid. Instead, to view an object (not an actual option), simply go to the entry (don't go into it) and just press shift-ctrl-z. Up comes the object! Not only that, but you can also use shift-ctrl-z to create a word object. If you have previously copied text from the word app, then just paste it in, and voila. To me, this all seems like a revelation - it increases the convenience and power of Agenda no end. For example, if you want to keep a record of a trek or a bike ride, this takes up loads of room in Agenda, but can simply be kept, not to mention extremely neatly, as suggested.A "Arial W]"Arial "Arial)"Arial. On the Series 3, the Data application had a record size of 4K bytes (or about 2100 if accessed from opl) i.e. the amount of data you could input into a single Data entry was limited purely by this size, each field could be of any length upto this size. The Series 5 is different. It has a maximum data file record size of 8200 bytes however it can distinguish between different types of fields. e.g. Text Numeric Floating Point Date Boolean (or Yes/No) Memo. Not all of these types are accessible from the opl programming languge by the way, only the following may be used because they have opl data constructs which correspond: Text - opl string ($) Numeric - opl long integer (&) Floating Point - opl floating point number Date, Boolean and Memo are ignored by opl. For both the 3a and s5 you can only access 32 fields in opl, the data app however does not limit you to this. (I don't know about the 3c but I guess it's the same.) Note however, that the data application does not seem to store character strings very efficiently and will only allow you to create (e.g.) 30 x 10, or 26 x 50 character strings in a single record, but will then allow you to store quite a few numeric and date values in addition. As an aside, you can only have 16 memo fields in a record which means that you can only store a (theoretical) maximum of 32Gb in each record.Consequently, it is advisable to use string and memo fields sparingly if you are creating data files with large numbers of fields. There are no field number restrictions if you use the C++ SDK but you still have to adhere to the 8200 byte rule. However, you can have more than one TABLE in a DATABASE! Upto 26 in fact, so you could have a total field size of 213200 bytes (in 8200 byte chunks). Below is the full list of available field types as in the SDK documentation, this is what you get if you get your hands dirty with C++! Note that a memo field is a variable length field and as such may potentially hold up to 2Gb of information, whereas a string field only 256 bytes. Fixed size fieldsVariable size fieldsIt would appear that when doing conversions of data files from the Series 3 to the Series 5, the conversion program automatically finds the longest string in your database and makes that the default size. This explains why some databases can become strangely inflated in total size. It only takes one rogue field to cause the whole database to grow enormously. Unfortunately you cannot change the size of the data field once the database is created. The only answer is to prune your database on the Series 3, cutting any long string fields down to a manageable size. You should also note that strings which are greater in length than 256 characters are automatically converted into memo entries. Consequently you only need to worry about strings less that 256 chars long. This site is engineered by Soft Base Computing Ltd. Apparently, a 'clean' installation may be of assistance. To do this: Un-install PsiWin from the Control Panel + Add/Remove Programs (you'll have to re-boot afterwards) Delete any remaining files/directories from c:\PsiWin and c:\Program Files\Psion - including those directories themselves. Re-boot again Run 'RegClean'. This is a FREE utility available from Microsoft's web site that cleans up your registry entries and makes it fairly spic-and-span. Re-boot yet again You should now be able to delete the 'My Psion' icon, etc from your desktop. Do so. Probably a good idea to re-boot just one last time! Make sure no other applications are running (press CTRL+ALT+DEL to see - 'End Task' everything other than 'Explorer'. It does NOT update the Series 5 to the Series 5mx. The file is zipped and comes in the standard SIS format meaning it is automatically set-up and can be removed. The patch is FREE and can be downloaded from:http://www.psion.com/downloadsThe update applies to all versions of the Series 5. It is currently available in English (370k) only and will be localised into the following five languages (French, German, Dutch, Italian and Spanish). A multi-lingual release will also be made available as an installable .SIS file.Installing the Service Release resolves the following issues:Agenda: Printing from the Agenda, when using MM/DD/YYYY date format now functions correctly. Previously the date would be omitted.Sheet: Operator precedence now works correctly Inserting rows/columns will now insert a blank row/column in the correct place when more than one row/column is selected.Concatenation (adding two text strings together with the & command) no longer results in a syntax error.Word: Spell-checking a word file (or embedded word object) no longer results in an unexpected exit.Receiving text via infrared into a word document now works correctly.Inserting a page break by pressing Ctrl + Enter will no longer replace highlighted text.Selecting a range of pages to print now results in only those pages being printed.A style with a border and insets applied to a paragraph is no longer adversely affected by inserting bullet points.Print preview now previews a file correctly after changing the margin size.Pressing Shift + Ctrl + 5 no longer causes Panic CBase 21.sDFirst, you need to set the PC Com port to the "virtual port" selected in setup. You can check this by right clicking the "My Computer" icon on your desktop, select the Device Manager tab, and find the infrared device listed under ports. It usually sets up on Com 3, unless its already in use. Then, go to My Psion connection properties by right-clicking the horizontal line in the systray (bottom right-hand corner of the task bar) and select Properties. Go to the Connections tab and select the virtual port. That should get you connected. Then, if you still have trouble making the IRDA connection work on an on-going basis, try changing the speed from 115k to 57k or vice versa. I've found from a practical standpoint, it doesn't make much difference in terms of time to transfer stuff, but sometimes its required to "get the attention" of the infra-red and make it talk to the Psion.(NB - Don't set PsiWin to Maximum Attainable, make sure the transfer speeds match i.e. both set to 115k or 57k, Mike McConnell )(get the complete IR low-down http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/martin_guthrie)\AIf you have built up a long list of contacts and want to speed up selecting a recipient, Press to create a new message then (with the cursor already on the address line) press to bring up the Address History list. Now, typing the first two or three letters of the email address will take you straight there. No more scrolling!>>n' installation. :-)eGThis will allow you to have the left page setup showing all your ToDo's and your right page showing appointments.Example given for the following ToDo lists: Business, Ministry, Personal and Family. These could be any ToDo lists you may have. Here goes:To do this you need to set up each ToDo list and set up your Day View --1) In the ToDo View, select the list you want to set and go to To-do list preferences (menu, To-do lists or Ctrl-A). Here you have many options. The relevant ones are:a) Display entries in other views (check)b) Crossed out entries in other views (uncheck)c) Standard position in other views (a time)This last one -- the standard position -- is where I control the order of the lists on my Day view. I have Business set to show at 2:00am, Ministry at 2:10am, Personal at 2:20am, Family at 2:30am. (Now everyone knows MY priorities in life ).Ah, these lists are all also sorted first by Date, then Priority.2) Now switch to Day ViewOne thing I have set is under Menu, Tools, Entry preferences, Day Entry -- "Time slot for untimed entries" is set to 1:05am and under Events -- "Time slot for entries" is set to 1:00am and under Anniversaries -- Time slot is 1:05am. This has muliti-day events show up above Anniversaries, for instance, and all of those show up BEFORE any To-Do items. Now, go to Menu, Tools, View Preferences:a) The first page of preferences you can set how you likeb) Under allowed types --I have ALL checked in Day View (in Week view, I have To-dos NOT checked)c) Under Slot definitions --Left page: from 1:00am to 5:00amSlot duration 1:00 hourShow Neither slot time nor lineRight page: from 6:00am to 11:00pmSlot duration 1:00 hourShow Slot time and slot lineSo, you can see, this sets a blank left page of your day view, ready to take all your ToDo's and a "timed" right page ready to show your appointments.BCronTab runs programs and macros at scheduled time, allowing backups, compression of files, defragmentation of disks and memory or any other batch at regular intervals (e.g. during the night). When the machine is off, CronTab wakes it up, runs the batch and switches it off.CronTab features also the possibiliy to run alarms that will stop after a specified number of sounds, saving the batteries when someone is not around to cancel it.CronTab can also save your batteries by switching off the serial link for the night.More FREEWARE Macro fun!Created by the reveered Pascal Nicolas http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Pines/1215/f these files if you have manually deleted a program that was installed by sis file...If I'm not mistaken, most of these files are only 1KB or so in size so theyshouldn't fill up your S5 completely...GTake a look at PassThru by Kevin Millican at:http://homepages.tesco.net/~Millican/Download.htmIt feeds the data from one comm port to the other so my psion can talk to my pc's modem. It means I can send and receive emails etc from my psion by hooking up to any pc with a modem. Anyway here's how I set mine up:I have a US Robotics external modem and running WinNT SP4 and got it working on win95, win95 OSR2 and win98 laptops with PCMCIA cards. I use the Hayes Compatible Modem as it's generic and I don't know enough about modem controls to do anything else - it works. So here's what I do.Passthru:Port 1 at 57600 baud using IRQ4Port 2 at 57600 baud using IRQ3Set Display incoming data to [Y]This can be set up by pressing space and shows you what's going to the modem. Getting online in comms is the first hurdle. If passthru is working and the cable is ok and all settings are ok then typing 'at' on the screen should echo onto the passthru screen. You can then type atdt 01234 567 890 or what ever and the modem should dial that number.Hope all this makes sense!Although I don't have a mobile I know a lot of you pick up emails at high cost and low bandwidth. This may be a good solution for picking up large emails etc when you are hooked upto you pc at work/home when you do your daily backups. ;)I know I am over simplifying things and generalising but I am sure some of you can see the benefits of this and customise to your own requirements.yGMacro5 is a small but efficient program designed to enable you to make more effective use of your PDA. It allows you to define up to 16 hotkeys and 3 panels of 27 shortcuts for :1) Switching directly to applications or documents (run them if not started). When you need info, you don't have to bother anymore whether the application is already running or not (then having to switch to the shell in order to find and start it) : you just key the corresponding shortcut and youre in.2) Pasting predefined texts (with keywords like %%date%%, %%query question_text%%).3) Executing MACROS (all the OPL, some new commands, send keys, etc...) for shortcuting all your repetitive tasks (e.g. direct access to the battery statistics, automatic link between your agenda and your data files, help on a selected command in the OPL editor, immediate link on/off, inserting new tasks in your agenda, modifying text, restart of your programs after a backup with PsiWin,....., and all the small utilities that are not complex enough to make an app but you use all the time).4) Switching directly to folders.5) Remapping keys.Since hotkeys can be any of the silkscreen keys, you can re-assign the sensitive keys to run your favorite applications and macros. For those, like me, who hate to press Ctrl+Shift+Key in order to access certain Menu functions, (always miss a key and got the wrong menu or a new character in the document), Macro5 provides a hotkey that will prompt for a key and send Ctrl+Shift+Key to the current application. And last but not least, it enables you to cycle through tasks (like ctrl-tab on Windows), to display a tasklist, to run macros at startup & switch on and to manage your display at switch on (backlight and contrast). If you don't believe me, increase the volume of a WAV file on your PC as much as you like (300% if you like!) - convert to your Psion and convert back to your PC using PsiWin. The volume has been reduced! Annoying if you want your alarms to be as loud as possible. If you convert them using the utils supplied on your PsiWin CD (in the Utils directory), Wav2Wve.exe & WveConv.exe, you can control the volume - anywhere between 100% and 1000%. Here's the basics.Step 1.First of all, get your source file ready (i.e. the WAV on the PC). The source file must be mono and saved as a standard Windows PCM wave file. Use Sound Recorder/Cool Edit to save it in the correct format. Also, make sure the WAV file and all the EXE files are in the same directory to make everything simple.Step 2.The WAV file needs to be converted to a Series 3a sound file, i.e. a WVE file. So, run:wav2wve -Ooutputfile.wve inputfile.wav -a100NoteThe '-O' is a dash followed by the letter 'O', not a zero. The 'outputfile.wve' is the name of the converted file (the Series 3 WVE file). The 'inputfile.wav' is the WAV file on your PC that you prepared in step 1.The '-a100' is the percentage number for amplification. This ranges from 100%-1000%. By default the setting is 100% therefore you only need it when increasing the volume.E.g.wav2wve -Opsion3a.wve pc.wavStep 3.You now have a sound file in the old Series 3 format and the next thing to do is to get it across to your Series 5. This is where the second EXE is used, wveconv.exe. Run:wveconv inputfile.wve outputfileNoteMake sure the right extension is given i.e. .wve - it needs the extension. No extension is needed for the 'outputfile' (the Psion 5 file). The 'inputfile.wve' would now be the file created from Step 2 and the 'outputfile' will be the final product for your S5. So:E.g. (following on from the above example)wveconv psion3a.wve psion5There you go! Easy as that. When increasing the volume, I couldn't notice a difference unless you stepped the volume up in 100s. Increasing the volume too much will distort the sound. For best results you should disable Fast Saves (on the Save tab of the Tools-Options menu command) before converting. If you convert a PC word processor document containing a table to Series 5 Word, the table will appear as an inserted Sheet object. If any of the cells in the table contains a large amount of text this may be truncated, since Series 5 Sheet cells cannot contain more than 255 characters.Converting Sheet Files: If your PC Spreadsheet contains multiple Worksheets, these will all be combined into a single Series5 Sheet file. Series5 Sheet does not use Worksheets.Converting Record and Voice Notes files: PsiWin can convert Windows .WAV sound files to Series5 format as long as they are monophonic (i.e. not stereo) and compressed using the PCM format. If your PC sound files are in a different format, you can use Windows Sound Recorder to convert them to a format which the PsiWin converter can handle.PsiWin cannot convert Series5 sound files which have been recorded using ADPCM compression.Converting Password-protected files: You cannot convert password protected files (including password-protected memos in Agenda). If you want to copy a password protected file between a Series 5 and a PC you need to remove the password on the Series 5 before converting the file.A"StartUp is a utility to launch an unlimited number of programs and files in batch mode."Essentially, the purpose of this FREE piece of software is to make sure all the 3rd party apps start up again after a backup (remember PsiWin closes them down but can't always load them backup!).Small, quick and useful and does exactly what is says on the box (to coin a phrase!).Created byPhilipp Salvisberg http://salvis.com/BWhen you restore a fresh backup or suffer from a soft or hard reset, certain system settings are lost (zoom levels, font settings etc.). He suggested deleting the file D:\System\Libs\P_Fault.ldd. "Once I did that, no more pinstripes, everything was fine on my new ROM 1.01 machine!"Solution 2: I believe that it is due to the \System\System.ini file being stored on the CF, and this file is incompatible between the two ROM versions. So when the CF disk from a Rom 1.01 is inserted in a Rom 1.00, the file is read System finds a load of garbage and doesn't handle it gracefully...Try renamimg the \System\System.ini file on a 1.01 just before removing the CF disk, or if that is not an alternative, delete it from the CF before it is read using the following method (you have to be quick!)Ensure System preferences has 'Show System Folder' set, and the current disk is C, insert CF, then press 'CTRl-Q', 'S', 'Enter', 'S', 'Del', 'Y' -- this will delete the first file beginning with 'S' in the first folder beginning with 'S' on your D:\ disk. With luck, you will delete system.ini before it is read!CI have read several times about corrupt files on CF cards. This can happen when your batteries are very low.The problem is intensified with rechargeables as they lose power very quickly. (I use NiMH accu's 1400 mAh, I get approximately 9 - 10 hours out of them and the Psion tells me I used 900 - 1000 mAh. I think this is good). So when I get a warning from my Psion, "Replace Main Batteries", 3 secconds later the Psion is dead! If you are busy trying to write to the CF card, you have a problem. For serveral weeks I have used the battery checker. You can tell the programme when you want the first warning and at what level you want to change the batteries. You can tell it at what interval you want to check the batteries etc.You can find this program at:http://members.tripod.com/~csutora/Best of it, its free. The settings I use whith 'Batt Check' are:* Check every 5 minutes* Warning LOW 2,25V* Warning change batterys 2,20VtBIf any one is interested I have finally worked out how to back up my S5 onto floppy using a ranger disk . This was originally designed for the S3.Plug the supplied S5 connector into the back of the Ranger disk. Enter comms. Settings - serial port 0 ,9600 , 8 ,1, none. Handshaking all off.Type in S3 and the disk responds with its menu. Type L will list all files on disk. (at the end of the list one has to press esc rather than enter ) To transfer files the handshaking needs then to change the Xon/Xoff to ticked. Files can now be tranfered using the Ymodem(batch) protocol. The positions are numbered, starting from 0 (the System icon), through 1 (Word icon) to 7 (the Sketch icon). Number 8 is the position above the word icon, number 15 the position above the Extras icon, and so on.The layout of the Extra bars is stored in the file "c:\system\apps\shell\shell.ini". This file also contains the definitions for the silkscreen icons, but while the layout of the rest of the extras bars can be changed in the control panel, the meaning of the silkscreen icons cannot be changed so easily. Here are instructions for doing it by hand, using a hex editor such as FileDump.Let's assume you want to start the web browser whenever you press the Sheet icon on the silkscreen. First use the control panel to select a fixed position for the web browser on your Extras bar. Row one above the sheet icon would be a good choice. Now start Filedump on "c:\system\apps\shell\shell.ini", and look for the strings "Sheet" and "Web". In front of the string there is a single byte that indicates the length of the string. The four bytes in front of that are the unique id of the applications. In front of that, there are three zero bytes, and then there is a byte that contains the position of the application on the extras bar. In our case, you should see the byte 02 in front of Sheet (if you counted, it should be the ninth byte counting backwards from the "S" of sheet), and 09 in front of Web. Simply exchange the values of these two bytes, i.e. put 09 in front of Sheet, and 02 in front of Web. Save the file back to its original location. Now you have to do a soft reboot to make the shell read the modified ini file. Be careful not to do anything that would make the shell rewrite the file before you reboot (i.e. do not change the extras bar or any system preferences).Voila, press the Sheet icon. Your web browser should come up. You can check the extras bar to see that Sheet is now on the position where Web had been before---on row one above the Sheet icon. You can therefore start Sheet by holding Control when you press the Sheet icon.Nothing can really go wrong when you do this. If you really mess up the file, the system will simply discard it and overwrite it using the default settings.Enjoy!@To setup a Freeserve account, you must signup on a PC. However, the conspicuous peeling case and a tiny crack near the recorder LED were two weak spots when I was boasting about my machine. As I am a surgeon, I decided to put the life of my beloved S5 in my own hands (something to avoid with real people) and fix the problem:First, I disassembled the case VERY carefully, a task not for the faint of heart. Then I protected the screen, S5 logo plate and keyboard with a film of adhesive plastic. After removing the old coating with a plastic blunt instrument to avoid deep scratches I proceeded to the painting job. I used three layers of glossy black spray paint "shot" from about 1 meter to give a very slight texture to the surfaces. Then I glued the LED crack with cyanoacrilate from the inside of the case. Reassembling the whole thing is even trickier than disassembling it but using reasonable care and time the ending result is very rewarding. My S5 has a brand new and very distinctive look! (And no crack).A final point: if you spray a cloth with silicone oil and wipe the screen lightly with it, the pointer will work much smoother! Of course I take no responability if anyone decides to "operate" his own machine!eBDoes the Emulator not fit on your 640x480 screen? You can either change your resolution to 800x600 in Windows (Goto 'Control Panel'->'Display'->'Settings'->'Screen Area') or download the following file:www.brandwood.force9.co.uk/tip.zip (31k)Unzip the contents to your emulators data directory.E.g. C:\epoc32\dataThis will overwrite two files. Now, loading up the System screen for the emulator will provide a slightly smaller diasplay which should fit on your 640x480 desktop.NB, you can also increase desktop space by removing the Windows Start Bar by dragging it down to the bottom of the display.+AQuick method for jumping to the top/bottom of long word files: When I'm writing long texts I sometimes want to go quick to the first page or the last. Notepad displays single levels of a multi-level outline, allowing users to type in notes quickly, and to organize and structure them in a unique way. Notes can have due dates, projects, alarms, different font styles, and various links. One of Notepad's key features is application linking. With the ability to link notes to Word, Sheet, Sketch, Record, Data, and most third party programs, Notepad can become the central point for launching and organizing files on your Psion. Notepad offers Contact linking, which links a note to a contact in the database, and Web linking, which can attach a web URL to a note. One tap on the toolbar opens the browser and goes to the attached web page. Notepad even works with Powerbase from Purple Software, allowing it to bet set up as the default database program. For scheduling, Notepad has it's own calendar that displays notes that are due on a selected date. With a single keypress, Notepad can display all past due items in the whole notepad file, or just those related to a single list of notes.http://www.pelicansoft.com@!A) YY 5When snoozing, note that the maximum increment is 60 minutes.
